Life Story
Charles Elijah Davis was born on 7 January 1881 in the Maynooth area of Hastings County, Ontario. The date is well supported by later family and memorial evidence and by the 1901 census, which records Charles E. Davis in his parents’ Hastings North household with that exact birth date.1, 4 In the 1881 census, taken when he was an infant, he appears as Charles Davis, age three months, in the Wicklow and McClure household of Joseph Henry Davis and Delilah Grace Burlanyette Davis.2 By 1891 he was ten years old in the same Hastings North district, living with Joseph M. Davis, Delila Davis, and younger siblings John, Robert G., William, and Sara Jane.3 Charles was the eldest child of Joseph Henry Davis and Delilah Grace Burlanyette, and his place in that family was later confirmed in Joseph’s will, which named “Charlie Elijah Davis” as a son and Emily Davis as Charles’s wife.24
Charles grew up in a hard farm economy of rock, hardwood bush, maple sugar, sheep, cattle, pigs, gardens, and winter work. His son Arnold Campbell Davis later described the Davis homestead as a 160-acre farm near Papineau Lake, with log buildings gradually replaced by frame structures and stone fences built from the rocks cleared out of the fields.5, 6 Charles attended a one-room school about three miles from the farm and the Anglican “White Church” about a mile and a half away. Family accounts put his formal schooling at perhaps grade four because he was needed at home, yet remember him as quick with figures, strong in memory, and unusually capable at mental arithmetic even in old age.5, 6
By about sixteen, Charles was spending winters in the lumber camps, leaving before daylight for the long work of felling, cutting, and skidding timber, then returning to farm labour in summer. The wages were remembered as going home to his mother, while the camps helped turn a lean farm boy into a powerful man of nearly six feet. The same family memory makes him athletic, especially as a runner; later, in Prince Albert, he was said to have won two gold watches in foot races.5
Charles moved west in the early 1900s. The family accounts differ slightly on the first harvest excursion, placing it either in 1902 or 1903, but both lead to the same larger point: by the mid-1900s he had left Ontario for Saskatchewan.5, 6 However the first trip is counted, Charles was clearly in Saskatchewan by the 1906 census, when he was recorded as an Ontario-born boarder in the household of Thomas Fowley.7 In Prince Albert he worked first for his cousin W. Y. Davis in a meat market, then in bush work, farm work, and the lumber mill. Family notes say he had saved enough by 1908 to buy a livery barn, entering the horse-powered taxi world that would define much of his public life.6
That work put Charles at the centre of district movement: roads, farms, commercial travellers, dances, and the stories of men who used a livery barn as a place to sleep. A 1968 newspaper profile, published when he was eighty-eight, preserves Charles’s own late-life version of the pioneer years. He said he came to Prince Albert in 1903, worked in the bush, opened a livery stable, acted as the “loud speaking system” at early winter-festival events, and remembered travel by dog-sled and horse before cars changed the district.8
At a dance, Charles met Emily Robina Elizabeth Campbell, daughter of Peter Campbell and Emma McGregor Campbell.5 Charles and Emily married on 22 December 1909. A newspaper notice published a few days later named the groom as C. E. Davis of Prince Albert and the bride as Emily Robena Elizabeth Campbell, youngest daughter of Peter Campbell; it said the wedding took place at the residence of George Will with immediate relatives present.9 Their sixtieth anniversary was publicly marked in December 1969 and January 1970, with a Birch Hills Gazette article and congratulatory letters confirming the long marriage and naming the anniversary date.10, 11
Emily’s own later records keep the Campbell geography close to the Davis story. Her funeral card gives her birth as 18 May 1891 and her death at Birch Hills on 10 April 1970, with burial in the family plot at Birch Hills.12 A family-held obituary or funeral report places her birth at Pukhan, later known as Fenton, and names her parents as Peter and Emma Campbell. It also preserves Campbell-family tradition of an 1878 Red River cart arrival and says Peter Campbell served among the Prince Albert volunteers in 1885, details that belong in future Campbell research rather than in Charles’s proof of identity.13
In the years around the marriage, Charles and his brother-in-law Howard Campbell, with a Cree guide named Badger from the Muskoday Reserve, travelled west toward the Alberta foothills to buy horses and drove them back for sale around Prince Albert and Shellbrook. The precise date is remembered two ways, either in 1909 or about the following year, but both versions fit the larger horse-trading world in which Charles was already working.5, 6
Family notes place Charles’s move to Shellbrook in 1911, where he opened a livery barn, drove livery, and also carried mail between Prince Albert and Shellbrook.6 A Dominion Lands affidavit places Charles E. Davis at Shellbrook on 24 April 1912, when he swore that he had not previously obtained a homestead entry.14 Shellbrook advertisements show the business in operation by 1914. In August, C. E. Davis advertised “Livery & Feed Stables” on Central Avenue, offering turnouts, a dray line, service for commercial men and landseekers, attention to farmers, and hay on hand.15 In December, he advertised “Livery, Feed, Sale and Dray Stables” with auto livery in connection.16
Charles also served in Shellbrook civic life. A December 1914 election report shows C. E. Davis returned as part of the previous year’s council.17 A January 1915 article names Chas Davis among Shellbrook district men attending a Conservative Association convention in Prince Albert, a useful clue to public associations but not a full political biography.18 In October 1915, a council report places Councillor Davis in ordinary village business: moving an appointment, seeking estimates for street and lane work, and moving adjournment as C. E. Davis.19 A second Dominion Lands affidavit, sworn at Shellbrook in June 1916, recorded his earlier entry for the northeast quarter of Section 16, Township 47, Range 3 west of the third meridian.20
The Shellbrook years were family years too. Peter Charles Davis had been born in Prince Albert in 1910; Emma Delila Olive Davis, Grace Merle Lorraine Davis, and the twins Joseph Elmer and Arnold Campbell Davis were born during the Shellbrook period.5, 6 The 1916 Prairie Provinces census places Charlie Davis, Emily, Peter, Emma, and infant Grace together at Shellbrook, with Charles’s Ontario-born brother Robert Davis also in the household.21
In 1918, representatives of the Birch Hills Board of Trade encouraged Charles to establish a livery barn in Birch Hills. Family memory says Charles accepted, built the barn, and moved the household there in August or autumn 1918; the written notes add that the Shellbrook barn had burned that summer and that Emily wanted to be nearer her Campbell relatives across the river at Fenton.5, 6 The move came as the First World War ended and influenza struck. The Birch Hills school was remembered as closed and used as a hospital. In 1919, Charles bought and sold horses to the Soldier Settlement Board and transported returning soldiers and settlers to their homesteads. A severe feed shortage the same year made hay valuable, and Charles was said to have profited because he had put up a large supply.5
By 1921, the census placed Charles and Emily in Birch Hills Village with Peter, Emma, Grace, Elmer, and Arnold. Charles was working in livery on his own account, and the family owned a four-room wood house.22 By 1931 the household was still in Birch Hills Village, but Charles was recorded as a farmer on a general farm and an employer, and the family owned a five-room wood house valued at $2,000.23 Charles and Emily’s known children were Peter Charles, Grace Merle Lorraine, Emma Delila Olive, twins Joseph Elmer and Arnold Campbell, Charles Gordon Goodwin, and John MacArthur Davis. Grace, also remembered in family usage as Grace Delilah Davis, became the researcher’s paternal grandmother.13 Charles Gordon Goodwin “Pat” Davis now has a separate short profile and war-service narrative, based on his obituary and on Pat’s own pension-application statement as preserved through Arnold Campbell Davis’s family papers.48, 49
Horses remained the public through-line. At the 1926 Prince Albert Fair, C. E. Davis placed first and second in several driving classes.25 At the 1927 Birch Hills Agricultural Society exhibition, he won or placed in saddle-pony, roadster, carriage, colt, and foal classes.26 The Agricultural Society later named him to committee work, held a market day sale at his barn, and continued to list him among horse-prize winners.27, 28, 29
Charles’s Birch Hills community life was broad, public, and sociable. Newspaper notices place him in the Loyal Orange Lodge: in 1926 C. E. Davis was elected an officer of Birch Hills L.O.L. No. 2005, in 1933 he was named on a Birch Hills L.O.L. committee, and in 1934 he was listed as marshal of Birch Hills L.O.L. No. 2003.30, 31, 32 The notices support the family memory that Charles was an Orangeman, while the lodge-number difference remains a useful research caution. Other notices catch the same sociable texture: C. E. Davis acted as floor manager for a curling club dance in 1931 and for an Agricultural Society card party and dance in 1933.33, 34 In 1940, Mrs. Charles Davis donated a turkey for a Red Cross auction while C. E. Davis served as auctioneer; in 1941, Charles Davis was auctioneer and master of ceremonies for a Heatherdell school Christmas-tree fundraiser.35, 36
The record trail also shows property, business, affidavit-service work, and fire. Charles delivered many affidavits between 1927 and 1936; the representative example cited here is a December 1929 court affidavit in which he described himself as “Charles E. Davis, of the Village of Birch Hills … Liveryman” and said he had travelled eight miles to serve legal papers near Birch Hills.37 In February 1931, the Star-Phoenix reported that the feed and livery barn owned by C. E. Davis at Birch Hills had been completely destroyed by fire. Workers saved the horses, cattle, and harness, but the building, feed, and hay were lost; the loss was estimated at $3,000 and covered by insurance.38
Fires followed the paper trail beyond the barn. In June 1933, a local notice reported that a fire destroyed a small dwelling house on C. E. Davis’s farm six miles west of Birch Hills.39 On Christmas Day 1943, another fire destroyed the occupied house of Anchor Meyers and an adjoining vacant house owned by C. E. Davis in Birch Hills; furniture stored in the Davis house was saved, but the house itself was lost.40 By 1958, a short notice described Charles Davis as an aged Fenton district farmer who suffered a fractured hip in a tractor accident while adjusting a carburetor on his farm, a late-life clue that pulls him back toward Emily’s Campbell district.41
Charles and Emily’s sons carried the family’s story into the Second World War. In September 1943, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Davis of Birch Hills received word that their son Lt. Arnold C. Davis had been wounded in Sicily.42 In October 1944, a notice reported that W.O. C. G. “Pat” Davis, another son, had been reported a prisoner of war after air operations, and it named brothers Sgt. John Davis with the R.C.A.F. in England and Lieut. Arnold Davis with the Canadian Army in Italy.43 In May 1945, a follow-up notice said Pilot Officer Charles Davis, R.A.F., a prisoner of war in Germany for ten months, was safe in England.44
Charles’s late-life public memory was warm and surprisingly national in reach. The 1968 Winter Festival profile made him a living pioneer witness in Prince Albert.8 John G. Diefenbaker’s family-held correspondence adds the personal dimension: in October 1969, Diefenbaker called Charlie Davis one of his best friends over the years, and in October 1972 he wrote to Charles in City Hospital, Saskatoon, remembering shared days and a long cold sleigh trip.45, 46 The diamond-anniversary article a few years earlier had already treated Charles and Emily as a remembered pioneer couple, still surrounded by family, neighbours, and public goodwill.10
Emily died in April 1970.12 Charles made his last will and testament on 25 November 1971; the family-held certified copy and 1973 covering letter preserve estate context, though the full probate file may add more about property, inventory, and distribution.47 Charles Elijah Davis died on 28 January 1973 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and his funeral service was held at Birch Hills United Church on 2 February 1973.1 He was buried in the Davis family plot at Birch Hills Cemetery, beside the community where livery barns, horses, dances, auctions, lodge work, fires, farm life, wartime sons, and old friendships had made him a local figure for more than half a century.
Research Notes
Birth and baptism
Charles’s 7 January 1881 birth date and Maynooth-area birthplace are treated here as established. They are supported by the 1901 census, age-consistent census evidence, memorial material, and family evidence.4, 1 No matching Ontario civil birth registration has been located in the reviewed online databases. That absence is a source limitation, not a serious doubt. A baptism or civil registration could add context if later found, but the conclusion does not depend on it.
Westward migration date
Arnold Campbell Davis’s two accounts differ slightly: the oral-history version places Charles on a harvest excursion in 1903, while the written-note version says 1902 and then says Charles left Ontario for Prince Albert in 1903.5, 6 Charles was clearly in Saskatchewan by the 1906 census, and his own late-life newspaper profile also placed his arrival at Prince Albert in 1903.7, 8 The discrepancy affects the first excursion year, not the larger conclusion that he was established in Saskatchewan by the mid-1900s.
Orange Lodge evidence
Newspaper notices support Charles’s involvement with the Loyal Orange Lodge at Birch Hills, but the lodge number varies: the 1926 notice names L.O.L. No. 2005, while the 1934 notice names L.O.L. No. 2003.30, 32 That difference should remain a research caution until lodge minutes, membership rolls, or district lodge records are checked.
Property, farm, and livery records
Newspaper notices, census entries, homestead affidavits, and the cited 1929 affidavit of service place Charles in livery, farm, property, and service-of-papers contexts, but they do not yet fully map the exact business sites, farm locations, ownership chain, insurance coverage, municipal tax history, or the full 1927-1936 affidavit-service pattern.14, 37, 38, 39 Tax rolls, land records, fire-insurance records, municipal minutes, local maps, the broader affidavit files, and the full probate file could materially refine those conclusions.
Family-memory sources
Arnold Campbell Davis was Charles and Emily’s son and is a strong family-memory witness for household life, personality, horses, livery barns, dance calling, the Birch Hills move, and the family’s own explanation of events.5, 6 His memories are used as evidence, not dismissed, but details that could affect chronology, property ownership, formal office, church/lodge membership, or military identity should still be checked against contemporary records.
